Why pixels
Character counts are wrong in both directions.
Google truncates a title by how wide it renders, not by how many characters it contains. The usual advice — "keep it under 60 characters" — therefore fails twice: a title of forty narrow letters measures about 222 px and fits comfortably, while forty wide ones measure about 666 px and get cut.
So this tool measures instead of counting. It draws your text to a canvas in Arial at the sizes Google uses — 20px for the title, 14px for the description — and reports the width in pixels against the widths at which truncation is observed.
Those limits are observed rendering widths, not published figures, and they move. Treat the preview as close, not exact — and remember Google rewrites descriptions when it feels like it.
